What it grades

Pick a preset, or bring your teacher's rubric. Each preset has its own page with the criteria in plain words.

How scoring works

  1. A fixed rubric

Each essay type has a versioned rubric with example answers for each score band. Public rubrics are summarised in our own words and linked.

  2. Three runs, median

The grader scores your essay three times. We keep the median per criterion and flag any criterion where the runs disagree by 2 points or more.

  3. Quotes are checked

Every quote must appear word for word in your essay, or it is dropped. You always see the sentence a note is about.

A worked example

This is what one note looks like. The essay is a sample we wrote ourselves for this page; it is not a real student's work.

Sample essay written by usparagraph 1 of 5

The first thing I learned at my family's restaurant was how to fold a napkin.1 Not the fancy swan kind, just a plain rectangle with the edges lined up. My mother checked every one I made, turned a few over, and sent me back to the table without a word. I was nine, and I decided she was the strictest person alive.

Hook & opening

5/6
“The first thing I learned at my family's restaurant was how to fold a napkin.”
Why
A small, concrete first line that puts the reader in a place with a task. It earns attention, but it does not yet hint at why the napkin matters.
Suggestion
Plant the tension you resolve in paragraph 4 with a few extra words.
Rewrite example (this sentence only)
The first thing I learned at my family's restaurant was how to fold a napkin, and how little my mother cared about my excuses.

Scores are estimates. This criterion scored 5 of 6; the full sample scored 31 of 36.

What you get back

A result is built to be used while you revise, not to be filed away.

  • Total and per-criterion scoresA score and a bar for every criterion, with a "less certain" flag where the three runs disagreed.
  • Your own sentences, highlightedEach note quotes a sentence from your essay and numbers it, so you can see exactly where a point was lost.
  • Why, suggestion, one-sentence rewriteEach criterion says why it scored that way, one concrete change, and a rewrite of that single sentence as an example.
  • Top 3 fixesThe three changes most worth making first, in order.
  • PDF export and historyWith any paid option you can print the result to PDF and see past grades. Grade again after edits to see what moved.
  • Deep review (paid)Paragraph-by-paragraph notes, how a reader may take the essay, a prompt-fit check, a cliche check and a revision plan, on a stronger model.

Honest limits

An estimate, not an official or admissions score.

  • An AI grader can be wrong. Treat the scores as a second opinion, and ask a teacher or counselor about anything important.
  • It checks your writing against a rubric. It does not know your school's admissions priorities.
  • Test presets (IELTS, TOEFL, AP, ACT) give practice estimates, not the exam board's scoring.
  • Standard grading reads up to 1,000 words.

Questions

Is the score official?

No. It is an estimate against a fixed, published rubric. It is not a College Board, ETS, IELTS, ACT or admissions score, and it cannot predict an admissions decision.

Will it write or rewrite my essay?

No. It scores your draft, quotes your own sentences, explains each point and gives a rewrite example for one sentence at a time. It never produces a full rewritten essay.

How many essays are free?

Two per Google account. Free results show the total and per-criterion scores; the quotes, reasons and suggestions need a paid grade. See pricing.

What happens to my essay?

It is stored in your history until you delete it, and is not used to train models. Terms require you to be 13 or older.

Why does it grade three times?

One model run can be lucky or harsh. We run the grader three times on the same rubric and use the median per criterion. When runs disagree by 2 points or more, that criterion is marked less certain.

Which kinds of essay can I grade?

College application essays and personal statements, class essays (6+1 Traits), IELTS Writing Task 2, TOEFL Academic Discussion and Write an Email, AP Lang and Lit free-response essays, ACT Writing, or your own rubric. Each has its own page with the criteria in plain words.

Can I use my teacher's rubric?

Yes. Open "Use your own rubric instead", paste the text (up to 1,500 words) or upload a .txt, .pdf or .docx file. No rubric yet? The rubric generator makes one from an assignment description.

How is this different from asking a general chatbot to grade my essay?

A chatbot answers differently each time and rarely quotes you exactly. Here the rubric is fixed and versioned, the essay is graded three times with the median kept, and every quote is checked against your text. The method is on how we grade essays.

Does it check whether my essay was written by AI?

No. It is a feedback tool for your own writing, not an AI-text detector.
